Alice Robinson (Queenstown, 24) played to her strengths setting a blistering pace in the steep fast sections of the Aliga course in Soldeu to nab second place in the FIS World Cup Super G overnight.
After a challenging couple of months, Robinson showed her attacking form, besting the winner Emma Aicher on the technical third sector of the course. With a final time of 1:27.60 she crossed the line +0.88s behind Aicher, the two-time Milano Cortina silver medallist, who recorded her second Super G win of the season.
The overnight podium means she maintains her second place in the Super G standings with 300 points. She trails leader Sofia Goggia by just 20 points making her a real contender in the Crystal Globe chase, with Emma Aicher in third with 224 points, ahead of the injured Lindsey Vonn.
Robinson buzzed after the race. “I’m really happy. It was such a nice day and such an amazing slope. I had great feelings all the way down. I love it here in Andorra and have a pretty good track record, so I wanted to keep it going.”
Robinson said she was able to play to her strengths to optimize the course to her advantage. “I think I executed the steep part really well. I knew the top section wasn’t my kind of course - really flat and glidey - so I’m proud of myself for getting the most out of sections I knew I could ski fast. It’s really nice to be back on the podium.”
Robinson took top honours in the Super G in St. Moritz last year, followed by a second place in Val d’Isere. This year has proven more challenging with two DNFs and a series of results outside the top 10 across Super G, Downhill and Giant Slalom. She says, however, her confidence has returned.
“Even though I didn’t get a medal at the Olympics I was happy with how I skied. I felt I executed well and want to finish off the season well. Maybe this is the thing that’s going to get my confidence back where it needs to be, so I’m really excited we’ve got another day here tomorrow.”
Robinson is back on the Super G course tonight. With five different winners in this event this winter, it’s still anyone’s game.
